Your Digital Nonprofit: The Social Profit Stack

3 Ways AI Can Drive Year-End Donations 💰

Hi Reader,

Guess what?

Year-end is only 72 days away. Hard.to.believe.

Giving Tuesday, only 44.

It’s such a busy time, and expectations are often wild and free, aren’t they?

You probably feel like your boss has asked you to help change the world.

Um, probably not, but you will engage with new and current donors and continue building your organization's best community of supporters.

Because you’re often expected to complete the work in record time, what if you could do the job much quicker?

Enter AI.

More and more nonprofits use tools like ChatGPT or Claude to create fundraising appeals.

These AI tools are like having an assistant at your fingertips, helping you craft messages that resonate with your audience.

Best part? It’s something your team can integrate into their workflow.

In today's edition of the Social Profit Stack, I'll share how to create donor communications using AI prompts when crafting social media posts, an email donor welcome sequence, and writing your nonprofit's best calls to action.

Let's dig in.

AI Is Everywhere

If you’re not using AI yet, that’s ok. You’re not alone.

The offer on the OpenAI website to add random ideas to a box to get responses seems weird. When you’re not sure what information to enter, you either take a chance to see what it spits out or avoid it altogether.

Oftentimes, the responses aren’t that great.

A prompt is the way to guide the AI tool you’re using. It provides a starting point for AI to generate the content you ask it to produce.

The key to creating a good prompt is to keep it clear and specific.

For example, instead of asking it to "write a fundraising email," consider "Write a compelling fundraising email highlighting the why and the impact of a donation on [nonprofit mission] and including a call to action."

These prompts can help you succeed if you plan to activate a Giving Tuesday campaign and a year-end donation push.

Limits of AI Use

The biggest limitation of using AI in your communications is that it isn’t human.

While AI tools can help you in a pinch, they are not a perfect stand-in for your creativity.

The content often lacks the emotional connection that your donors have come to expect.

Like your audience, AI doesn’t always grasp the context of your nonprofit’s value and can lead to creating messages that are dull and even boring.

Always remember AI is a tool to assist you, not become you.

AI Prompt Assistant for Year-End

I’m all about helping you elevate your donor’s experience when it comes to fundraising.

You can ask your supporters for an investment—from $5 to $1 million+. Asking for donations rather than expecting donations can be the foundation for your organization's revenue success.

Here’s how prompting can help you create compelling year-end fundraising messages.

Social Media
Your first step is to use social media to attract new supporters.
Whether we like it or not, platforms like Facebook and Instagram can drive more people to your website.

Here’s the prompt:
[I want you to act as a nonprofit social media expert. Can you write 20 Instagram posts encouraging followers to donate to our year-end campaign? Focus on different aspects of our impact—e.g., how donations support [specific cause], success stories, and upcoming events. Use engaging captions and include a call to action in each post.
I’m happy to answer questions about my nonprofit before we begin.]

A quick note - when you combine ChatGPT with Canva, they make it simple to create social media posts in bulk in a few minutes. After generating your posts, ask ChatGPT to provide the exact steps to turn these quotes into images.

Donor Welcome Sequence
When using email to communicate with your supporters, adding an automated donor welcome sequence can share more great content about your organization and the impact their gift will make.

Here’s the prompt:
[You're an expert at creating email marketing sequences. Please create a donor welcome email sequence for our upcoming nonprofit, [CharityABC], year-end appeal. These emails will consist of 3-4 emails to help thank and steward new donors. The sequence triggers when someone donates via our donation platform and is added to our email list. The object of the sequence is to steward our donors.
We are a [team of X] with a small but engaged donor base. Our tone is always [friendly] and [informal] with lots of [humour and puns].
Please highlight the [nonprofit’s mission], recent successes, ways donors can get involved, and personalized content that acknowledges their gift. Include clear contact information so donors can reach out for more details or to engage with us.
I’m happy to answer questions about my nonprofit before we begin.]

Calls to Action
A compelling call to action (CTA) is more than a closing line—it helps your supporters take the next step.
Whether donating, signing up for your newsletter, or following your nonprofit on social media, a well-thought-out CTA can increase engagement and conversion rates.

Here’s the prompt:
[Generate ten calls to action for our Giving Tuesday appeal, focusing on asking our donors to take immediate action and donate. Each example should be direct and clear, such as:

  • 'Donate today to make a lasting difference in the lives of [beneficiaries].'
  • 'Give now to help us reach our year-end goal and support [mission].'
  • 'Join us in making a real impact—every donation counts.'
    end]

These prompts will give you varied, actionable CTAs for emails, social media, and your website.

Next Up

As you prepare for your Giving Tuesday and year-end campaigns, leveraging tools like ChatGPT can transform how you engage with donors. Consider the following:

Experiment with new prompts to create more content. Your website might need a little love, or your email needs inspiration.

  1. Review your previous social media posts to ask ChatGPT to improve your messaging.
  2. Ask ChatGPT to review your current calls to action, suggest new ones, and share the impact your organization wants to make.
  3. Use different AI tools to help you design images for your entire year-end campaign, allowing you to focus on building relationships and raising more funds.

Adding AI as an assistant can save a ton of time and improve the impact of your donor communications. When you optimize your first social media post to a great call to action—your organization’s year-end fundraising will succeed.
