Social Creates Awareness. Email Converts Donors 💁🏻‍♀️

Hey Reader,

A client of mine spent the past few months and a big hunk of her marketing budget boosting Instagram posts before she called me. "We have followers," she said. "But we’re not seeing any donations.”

That's when we started over.

This client runs a small, well-loved nonprofit that has tried everything the internet told her to do. She posts three times a week and runs a few boosted ads around year-end.

Her team celebrated when a post reached 200 likes. But when she pulled her donation report at year-end, almost none of that activity showed up as a gift. Meanwhile, her list of 4,000 email subscribers had been receiving one newsletter per quarter and generating more revenue than all social channels combined.

Up to that point, nobody had noticed. All the attention and her budget had gone to the loudest channel rather than to the one quietly working.

The time had come to reorganize her system.

No, she didn't ditch social media, but she made email the backbone of fundraising: a monthly newsletter with one clear ask, a three-part welcome series for new subscribers, and a simple year-end campaign that led with a story rather than a plea.

Social media's job? It changed too. Instead of trying to convince strangers, we began amplifying what was already happening in the inbox: teasing the newsletter, sharing a donor's story before the email dropped, thanking donors publicly after a campaign closed.

And we didn't stop there. We looked closely at what happened after someone gave. Was the thank-you page warm or robotic? Did the confirmation email feel personal or automated?

Tiny fixes. Donors noticed. And six weeks in, her open rates climbed, her average gift size increased, and for the first time, she could point to email as the reason.

In a noisy, expensive digital world, you don't need to be everywhere, but you do need a well-thought-out communications sequence. Email should be the first channel your organization owns and invests in because your nonprofit fully controls it and consistently outperforms social media in inspiring the next gift.

Recent data backs this up: donors say email is the channel that most inspires them to give, ahead of social media, and email's share of online nonprofit revenue is climbing year over year. Social media plays an important role, but it's a supporting one that creates awareness and warms people up, then hands them off to email to make the ask.

Think of it like a dinner party: social media is the invitation on the door, but email is the conversation people enjoy that makes them want to come back next time. And underneath both channels sits the easiest piece to skip: the donor experience.

A generic thank-you page or a cold confirmation email quietly erodes the goodwill your story-driven appeal just built. Retention lives in those small, human moments as much as in the ask itself. And guess what? It's far cheaper to retain a donor you already have than to chase a new one on a platform that's getting more expensive every year.

Here’s something to try this week: Review your last three donor confirmation emails and your thank-you page. Read them as if you were a first-time donor who just gave $25. Does it sound like a form letter, or like someone will care about your note? If it's the former, rewrite the first two sentences to sound as if a real person is grateful. Often, that’s all it takes to shift the tone.

Not certain where to start sequencing your channels, or you'd like a second opinion on whether your donor experience is helping or hurting retention? Hit reply! I read every response.

You’re awesome for continuing this work at a time when it's harder than ever to earn someone's attention, let alone their trust.

You are a nonprofit fundraising strategist specializing in donor nurturing sequences that move prospects through the donor journey.

Design a comprehensive donor nurturing sequence for [FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN/PROGRAM] targeting [DONOR PROFILE — e.g., mid-level donor, monthly giving prospect, major gift prospect] at [GIFT CAPACITY RANGE].

Create a [NUMBER]-touch sequence over [TIMEFRAME] days that moves prospects from awareness through the decision to give. Structure the sequence as:

  1. Initial awareness touchpoint addressing [KEY PAIN POINT / COMMUNITY NEED]
  2. Education sequence with impact stories from [SIMILAR PROGRAMS OR PAST CAMPAIGNS]
  3. Credibility building with proof elements (outcomes data, third-party validation, financial transparency)
  4. Objection handling for [COMMON DONOR HESITATIONS — e.g., "how do I know my gift matters," "why recurring vs. one-time," "overhead concerns"]
  5. Case for support positioning and an ask (gift, monthly commitment, event RSVP)
  6. Urgency creation with social proof and campaign deadline/matching gift scarcity

For each touchpoint, specify: email copy angle, content asset (impact story, annual report excerpt, webinar/info session), CTA type, and decision gates (ready to give or loop back into nurture).

Include behavioural triggers: if a prospect clicks a story link but doesn't visit the donation page, send follow-up.

Integrate multiple channels: email, donation landing page content, video/testimonial content recommendations, and info session or virtual event invitations.

Include donor scoring logic: what actions indicate giving readiness (e.g., repeat opens, story engagement, event attendance).

Provide a personalization framework using donor research data: [DONOR NAME], [GIVING HISTORY], [CAUSE AREA INTEREST].

Format as a fundraising-ready nurturing blueprint with email templates, asset assignments, and CRM automation setup (e.g., [CRM NAME — Bloomerang, DonorPerfect, Kindful]).
